The Real McCoy

McCoy Tyner (born December 11, 1938) – Happy 77th Birthday!

McCoy Tyner is playing the piano somewhere tonight, I know, and playing a sequence of notes he’s never played. And no one else has ever played. Before he made great records of his own such as The Real McCoy (1967) and (one of my favorite albums in any genre) Extensions (1972), he was the pianist in John Coltrane’s quartet that included Elvin Jones on drums and Jimmy Garrison on bass. They made some pretty good records, too.

Find one and listen. Especially if you think you don’t like jazz.
